Elafonisi beach lies on a small islet in the southwestern side of Crete. Almost a mile long, with blindingly white sand and turqoise clear lagoon-like waters that ripple as they pick up the breeze and swirl the pink tinged sand which frames them. The soft pink hue is created by tidal and wave-induced deposits of pigmented microorganisms living in a symbiotic relationship with native seaweed, small crushed pieces of dead corals and thousands of broken shells.
TRAVEL NOTE: You can ge to Elafonisi by car (from Chania on a crooked narrow road throuch hills) or by bus. From Chania it takes approximately 2 hours to get there. You can easily park a car on an extensive free parking right before the actual beach.
