Its soft pink hue is created by tidal and wave-induced deposits of pigmented microorganisms living in a symbiotic relationship with native seaweed, small crushed pieces of dead corals and thousands of broken shells. 

Visiting Balos lagoon is said to be a must when you're staying in the north of Crete, therefore the beach can get a little bit packed during July and August, but its still worth a visit.

The island of Gramvousa is located one hour long ferry ride from Kissamoss port alongside steep cliffs of Kórikos peninsula. Due to curving coastline and surrounding cliffs the waters around are calm and warm.
